I’m torn about this book – the photos are good cmnally the descriptions of the thought process behind the works can be enlightening however there is a certain shallowness to the descriptions that leaves me wanting more than just the few tips sandwiched between the stories. I went into work to collect it on Saturday and I have skimmed through the content.

Had to shoot volleyball ladies ish the other day and was picturing water polo in my head and smiling to myself. I may never be as successful as you have been, but be damned sure I will be as passionate. Of course, there were a few tidbits that maybe made me say to myself, “very clever”, but overall I didn’t learn much photographically.
And for me reading some of the stories were really inspiring and educating in terms of not giving up, being persistent and focusing on the job as without making excuses.

John Aldred is based in Scotland and photographs animals in the studio and people in the wild. Clinton Lofthouse is a Photographer, Retoucher and Digital Artist based in the United Kingdom, who specialises in creative retouching and composites. I have always appreciated his creative approach to lighting and use of multiple speed lights to shape the light and do things that are not easily done with conventional studio lights.

What makes the book so unique is the “triangle of learning” where 1 Joe distills the concept down to one brief sentence.
It’s ok if this isn’t the book for you. It really is one of the best, and definitely the most readable, of any photography book I own. Momeny was not there when Joe McNally wrote the book, but I would assume that he assumed that if you are thd the book you have some clue about lights, and a bit more that a clue about studio and on location strobes. Joe, really enjoyed the book — so much so that I went back and bought a second copy for a real good photo buddy and gave it to him!

Thanks for an enjoyable read, some reinforcement of some existing concepts, and a lot of new things to try. There’s even an invaluable illustrated tutorial at the end of that book in which McNally, wearing a gorilla suit,! Like many professionals, he no doubt is often asked to share his expertise with others, and he responds here with his descriptions of the background of photo projects, while clearly showing the technical and creative processes mcnqlly getting publishable pictures.
That was obvious when he came to lecture at Syracuse University and put a glass of milk and a glass of vodka on the lectern. I like the style of this book.
