Noticing Denisson for the first time Varion approaches his brother and clearly states that the empire had managed to clone him after all, before taking off in his drop-ship.

Dennison wonders about being Varion’s clone and about the morality of his brother’s actions and if fighting for the Rebels is as morally just as sandeerson for the Empire, to which Kern counters with his own logic.
So, failure upon failure, as you could have guessed. Tor once again proves to be masterful at putting out science firstbonr shorts.

But as Firstborn is a short story for free at Tor. The High Emperor expects great things of him that Dennison can hardly reciprocate beyond his own lack of self-esteem.
Earlier this year he released Calamitythe finale of the 1 New York Times bestselling Reckoners trilogy that began with Steelheart. Dennison is not Varion. This wasn’t particularly bad, but I expect more from Sanderson, even out of his genre.
I realise that the two brothers were at the center of the story, but with all those commanders, wasn’t there anyone else who had an idea of how to handle the situation?
