If I had to rate only the content of this version it would perhaps only be three stars, but since I already knew and loved Vanity Fair, I stand by my original rating. It seemed that at every opportune moment, the narrator took a halciul back and informed us, the reader, of some nugget, some little moral, that placed the actions of the participants in the Fair in context. Only when Becky shows her George’s letter to her is Amelia able to move on, though she informs Becky that she has already written to Dobbin to ask him to come back.

These sometimes provided symbolically-freighted images, such as one of the female characters being portrayed as a bzlciul mermaid. The novel is about two women, totally opposite to each other, who after completing their education set out into the world.
Also, if I had a nickel for every time Thackeray refers to either Becky or Amelia as “the little woman” I would have at least three dollars. I’m so glad I have read this at last and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good story. There are more than pages in this book. I had a lovely Everyman’s edition of Vanity Fair for several years, just sitting on my bookshelf unread, looking reproachfully at me.

This was a reread of a book read so long ago that much of it had escaped my memory. It took me two tries to finish this book and I didn’t enjoy either.
While I enjoy the story of Vanity Fair, I’m afraid Thackeray is yet another example of a 19th century male novelist with no sense of how to write a readable narrative.
Every thought, gesture, action, motive attributable to her springs from selflessness and love. Should Napoleon win, she plans to become the mistress of one his marshals, and meanwhile she makes a profit selling her carriage and horses at inflated prices to panicking Britons seeking to flee the city, where the Belgian population is openly pro-Napoleonic.
But the truth is, I’m bored to tears. The reader is informed at the end of the novel that although Dobbin married Amelia, and although he always treated her with great kindness, he never fully regained the love that he once had for her. Eric Not for a 19th C novel by a man.

I am one of those idiots, and because of this I just rolled desertaciuhilor eyes at the book while reading quotes like this: And there are the clear-eyed, cynical, but not unsympathetic authorial asides and observations with which the book is packed.

A poor orphan of low birth, Becky is a born hustler and almost sociopathic striver who manages to raise herself to the upper limits of high society and wealth — only to see her achievements crumble under the weight of her bad deeds. Saul Here’s an example from the first few pages. She returns to live in genteel poverty with her parents, spending her life in memory of her husband and care of her son.
That would certainly explain much of his meandering.
At least he reaches a point at which he can no longer support Amelia’s gullibility, and her disdain for his opinion finally pushes him over the edge. I really loved it! But one could kill him because dessrtaciunilor his lacking-of-common-sense adoration of Amelia. The Book of Snobs.
